How to Reduce Alert Fatigue Without Hiding Failures
Use confirmation, dependencies and bounded escalation to make monitoring alerts easier to act on.

Start with actionable ownership
Every monitor should have an owner and a response path. Remove duplicate checks that ask the same question, but retain separate evidence for different service layers. Test the chosen destination and document who receives it.
Confirm and escalate deliberately
Use incident confirmation for transient failures and bounded escalation for persistent outages. For example, notify operations immediately after confirmation, then a second channel after five minutes. Recovery should cancel pending escalation.
Model upstream dependencies
A gateway outage can affect an API and website. Dependencies can suppress secondary notifications while child checks and actual failures continue to be recorded. Reject circular graphs; suppression must not invent an UP state.
Review after an incident
Count duplicate or unactionable alerts, inspect delivery failures and adjust thresholds based on evidence. Use maintenance windows for planned work. Avoid increasing thresholds merely to silence a problem customers still experience.
