What uptime measures
Uptime describes how often a service is available during a stated period. Always ask what was measured: successful HTTP checks, time outside confirmed incidents, or a complete customer journey. These methods answer different questions. A homepage returning 200 can still have a broken checkout, while an ICMP-blocked host can serve a healthy website.
Read the denominator
If 999 of 1,000 recorded checks succeed, check-based uptime is 99.9%. This does not establish exactly how many seconds the site was down between observations. The check interval, timeouts, confirmation policy and observation location all affect what you can detect. A new monitor with ten successful checks has less evidence than one observed continuously for a month.
Keep missing history visible
A period with no checks should say no data. It should not become 100% uptime. Login2Cloud uses recorded external-check success for dashboard uptime, with retained daily aggregates for longer windows. Heartbeats and registration lookups are separate signals. Read the displayed period and sample count before comparing two services.
Choose a useful target
Start with the page your customers depend on. Add a content assertion for an expected element, then monitor a dedicated API readiness endpoint if your application has one. Use a separate certificate monitor for expiry and an independent heartbeat for scheduled jobs. No single test proves that every part of a business workflow works.
Turn measurement into action
Configure a real alert destination and test it. Review the first result before relying on the monitor. When an incident occurs, compare its check timestamps with your deployment and application records. Use measured trends to improve reliability, not to make guarantees the data cannot support.
Common questions
Does 100% uptime prove there were no outages?
No. It means the chosen measurement recorded no failures during the displayed coverage. Short outages between checks can be missed.
Are uptime and page speed the same?
No. A service can respond successfully but slowly. Track response time alongside availability.
